Did you know that Recycle Week is happening from 14-20 October? To celebrate, we’ve gathered some fantastic ways to not only recycle but also get rewarded for your efforts on the King’s Road. Discover in-store recycling programs you might not be aware of and enjoy discounts with your daily coffee—all while helping to save the planet and your wallet!
Where to recycle your empty beauty bottles
Got a load of empties? Space NK and Peter Jones are all collecting them in-store. Here’s the low down on how it works.
Peter Jones
Discover ‘Beautycycle’ at Peter Jones. Finished your face cream or used the last of your lip balm? Bring them into Peter Jones and they’ll recycle them for you and not only that, if you’re a My John Lewis member, you’ll get £5 off when you spend £50 ore more on B Corp certified beauty brands that day. Juts bring in five or more clean, empty beauty product containers to any of the beauty counters.
Space NK
In partnership with circular-economy company Handle Recycling, which aims to reduce beauty-industry waste by collecting and repurposing it, Space NK accept all recyclable beauty packaging, including items from other brands in-store. All you have to do is pop into store, pick up a Handle collection bag, fill it with your empties and drop it off in the Handle bin. Find out more here, including details on what can be recycled.
Where to recycle your clothing
Having a declutter? Don’t chuck it. Nike and Sweaty Betty want your old trainers and yoga leggings.
H&M
Take advantage of H&M’s Garment Collecting programme. Bring your unwanted clothes or textiles, by any brand and in any condition to the till in store and receive a thank you voucher to use towards your next purchase. It’s as simple as that!
M&S x Oxfam
Ever heard of Shwopping? The scheme is run in partnership with Oxfam to encourage swapping pre-loved clothes for money towards a new purchase. Take your unwanted clothes to Oxfam and receive a £5 M&S voucher so long as your donation contains at least one M&S item. The voucher can be redeemed on a £35+ spend on clothing, home and beauty products in M&S stores
Nike
With the Nike Grind initiative, Nike give your battered old running shoes a new lease of life. Drop off any brand of athletic trainers in-store (so long as there are no metal studs or spikes on them) and they’ll either be cleaned up and donated elsewhere or sent away for recycling.
Peter Jones
Similar to ‘Beautycycle’, you can recycle your clothing with Peter Jones’ ‘Fashioncycle’ scheme in partnership with Satcol. Simply take any pre-loved items of clothing to a fashion till. Hand over five or more items and show your My John Lewis card to get a £5 off Fashion Rental Voucher. Satcol, the largest charity-owned textiles sorting provider in the UK will then separate the textiles into three types, for onward selling in charity shops, for selling to secondary markets and if unwearable they will go through a sorting machine to be repurposed into all kinds of products including pet bedding or carpet underlay.
Reformation
As tough as it may be to part with anything from Reformation, there’s a reward waiting for you! Bring in your pre-loved Reformation shoes, bags, denim, sweaters, tees, outerwear, and activewear to any store and receive credit for the items you no longer need.
Sweaty Betty
Bring your old leggings back into store and get £10 off your next £50 spend at Sweaty Betty. So far, in partnership with SOEX, Sweaty Betty have helped save more than 30,000+ garments from going to landfill since launching the scheme in 2019. SOEX either turn leggings into new raw materials, send them for use in the rag trade or ensure anything that can’t be used is recycled properly. Simply put your unwanted leggings in the in-store bins (any brand of leggings are accepted).
Other ways to live more sustainably on the King’s Road
