Spotlight, 13 May 2021
Re-opening on 17 May 2021, just in time for the rules on indoor dining to relax, The Surprise pub can’t wait to welcome you under its new management.
Previously part of the Youngs group, the now independently run pub has undergone a complete refurbishment and has a brand new team ready to welcome you.
The brains behind the redesign is London interior designer Isabella Worsley, who said the aim was to create a welcoming design that “cuts away from the heavily exhausted ‘bistro pub’ and returns to the traditional pub aesthetic – the sort to feel just as welcoming for a pint at the end of the day as for a full supper with friends.
As well as a cosy ambience, there’s a real focus on reclaimed materials too. You’ll spot upcycled timber shelving, pub tables and antique pendant lights, plus salvaged hessian, used as café curtains in the windows. Carefully sourced artwork also nods to The Surprise’s naval heritage (it gets its name from a French Napoleonic warship that was captured by the British and then used to sneak up on and capture other French ships) with a mix of locally focused artworks and tongue-in-cheek pub references along the way.
The pub itself may be over 200 years old, but Jack Greenall, the new name behind the pub, hopes the venture will play a part in revitalising London hospitality post-Covid. He said, “it’s vital that we get our vibrant pubs, restaurant, bars and hotels open and back at the centre of our lives. They play such an important role in society – from simply unwinding, first dates, celebrations, proposals and more.”
He has enlisted Pedro Costa as Head Chef, who will use top quality local product to create British inspired dishes. Think traditional pub fare, from 10oz sirloin steak with triple cooked chips to burgers (with vegan options available), and team favourite, a beautiful rack of Helmsley lamb.
