Chelsea’s most iconic art space may currently be under refurbishment but, rest assured, when the Saatchi Gallery reopens, it’s going bigger, bolder and golder than ever before.
From 2 November 2019 – 3 May 2020, the Duke of York Square gallery will be unveiling a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition of glittering world heritage artefacts from the tomb of 18th Dynasty Pharaoh, Tutankhamun.
Commemorating the centenary of archaeologist Howard Carter and financier Lord Carnarvon’s jaw-dropping discovery in 1922, TUTANKHAMUN: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh will present more than 150 original objects from the tomb itself. What’s more, an incredible 60 pieces are travelling out of Egypt for the first – and final – time.
London is the third destination on the tour, following record-breaking stops in Los Angeles and Paris, where the 1.4million attendees made it the most popular exhibition in France’s history.
The best-known of the Egyptian pharaohs, Tutankhamun was known as the Boy King, due to his early ascent to leadership: he took the throne at the tender of age of eight or nine years old. The only Egyptian tomb ever to be found intact, public fascination surrounding the pharaoh has continued for decades.
This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be wowed and humbled by these incredible artefacts before they return to Egypt forever.
