Seventy and sensational! A true local institution and one of Britain’s most influential theatres, The Royal Court has spent seven decades shaking things up with bold, provocative, and groundbreaking drama. Since opening its doors in 1956, it’s launched the careers of some of the UK’s most important playwrights while welcoming generations of neighbours, locals, and theatre lovers from the community through its doors. Because this milestone isn’t just about theatre history, it’s about the people, our neighbourhood, and the stories that have grown alongside it.
This year, The Royal Court is throwing a 70th birthday bash like no other. Artistic Director David Byrne promises “a legendary, year-long party,” with 12 major productions across both stages celebrating innovation, diversity, and theatrical ambition, all right here in Chelsea. And you are invited!
The party isn’t just about looking back though. For us theatre-lovers, that means even more stories and unforgettable nights just around the corner where you can expect laughter, tears, provocation and maybe a few jaw-dropping moments. From world premieres, daring revivals, and star-studded performances, the jam-packed programme includes Tilda Swinton reprising Man to Man (book here), Gary Oldman tackling Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape (book here), as well as fresh voices shaking things up with plays like Archduke (book here). The season also embraces international voices, such as Broadway transfer John Proctor Is the Villain (book here), and champions emerging talent through new writing initiatives and the Young Playwrights programme.
Tickets are selling fast so don’t miss your chance to be a part of the celebrations and book quick to avoid disappointment. Explore the full programme here.
