Dame Mary Quant

Dame Mary Quant

The pioneer of the mini skirt and King’s Road, Dame Mary Quant sadly passed away on 13 April 2023, aged 93.

One of the most influential figures in the fashion scene of the 1960s and a pioneer of King’s Road bohemia, Quant made history with her ground-breaking boutique Bazaar at 138A King’s Road – the embodiment of a new generation’s attitude to life and fashion, bringing energy and fun to shopping.

She revolutionised fashion; harnessing youth and street style in a career that spanned 1955-1975 and in challenging conventions, she popularised tights, hot pants and the mini skirt. In 2019, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the World Fashion Awards which coincided with a major international retrospective exploring her influential career at the V&A museum, and the unveiling of a Blue Plaque outside the original location of Bazaar.

A role true role model to women, to today’s creatives and an icon of the Swinging Sixties and Chelsea’s own heritage, she will forever be remembered and her enduring legacy cherished.
