Chelsea

From Mary Quant’s mini skirts to Vivienne Westwood’s chicken-bone slogans and Ossie Clark’s theatrical fashion shows, Chelsea’s design heritage is something worth celebrating. Whether it’s architecture or art galleries, fashion or food, Chelsea flourishes today as a neighbourhood rich in artistry and artisan making.
Great news, then, that Chelsea will be participating in the London Design Festival 2019 for the first time ever. From 14-22 September, the Chelsea Design District will host a series of events, experiences and talks to shine a spotlight on the borough’s bohemian and boundary-pushing design mavericks, past and present.
Duke of York Square’s Saatchi Gallery will be hosting I-MADE, London’s first exhibition solely dedicated to Italian design and manufacture, while The National Army Museum explores the life and legacy of iconic designer Abram Games through ‘The Art of Persuasion’.
Interior design buffs (or novices) will learn plenty from Little Greene’s how-to masterclasses, or hands-on creative demonstrations at Farrow & Ball. At the other end of King’s Road, Swoop into Bluebird, where Timothy Oulton will be bringing his avant-garde furniture and interiors, alongside rare vintage collectibles, to the popular Chelsea nesting ground.
There are plenty of gems for jewellery lovers, too. Join jewellery designers Annoushka Ducas MBE for a journey into her multi-sensory world and Monica Vinader for a unique design collaboration with fashion editor Caroline Issa.
There will also be a presentation by Peter Jones (a Chelsea resident himself) on the fascinating story of the fabled department store’s Grade II listed building, with a pop-up exhibition exploring how the bricks and mortar shop has changed from 1877 to present day.
What’s more, show your London Design Festival guide in a number of Chelsea restaurants to receive special discounts throughout the festival. Rabbit, Manicomio, Gallery Mess and Hans’ Bar and Grill are all taking part – whether it’s a complimentary glass of bubbly or discount on your bill.
Heading to Rabbit? Make sure you present your guide for complimentary fizz and ‘mouthfuls’. The offer is exclusive to lunch time seats, so book your seat fast.
